First off, let me say I didn't even know you could show more than one
time.
I see no problem with it.
The purpose of the Futurity was always to show dogs, and display who was
producing. Showing nine times, does not defeat the purpose. Taking more
dogs to the National does not hurt that purpose. It isn't even more dogs
because it is still just the winner and reserve from each region.
I kind of like the idea, and if someone wants to enter nine shows in the
hopes that one of the judges will go with their dog, I say, go for it. The
only cost is to the owner to pay the handler nine times. The show gets
entries, the handler gets more income and we all get to see more dogs.
I don't see a downside.
I remember arguing with John DeHope before he died. (It got a lot harder
after). After we were in a heated discussion, he said to me, "The problem
with you, Evan, is that you just want everyone to have a good time and have
fun at dog shows."
I had no response to that.

Hi all...I would like to start a discussion on the new Futurity rule that
allows dogs to be shown in multiple regions until they win. Before you
offer your input however, I would ask a couple of things.....Please remember
that the people on the Futurity Committee suggested the new rule in an
attempt to promote participation. Regardless of how you feel, it serves no
purpose to make statements like "the rule is outrageous"...or "the
Futurity/Maturity wins are meaningless" etc, etc, etc....Please post your
opinion, but
keep in mind that the people on the other side of your computer or phone
have worked countless hours to help keep your Futurity System alive and
really do have its best interest at heart.
It is said that perception is reality....and yes, we have heard the
comments that the ability to enter and show in multiple regions favors the
wealthy. So here are some 2017 numbers that are a reality.....
For 2017: There were 530 entries of 443 dogs.
Of the 443 dogs:
-360 were entered once
-79 were entered twice
-4 were entered 3 times.
Of the 79 dogs entered twice, 33 were shown twice.
Of the 4 dogs entered 3 times, 2 were shown twice, and 2 were shown 3
times.
........Let me repeat....out of the 443 dogs entered across the country,
only 2 were shown 3 times.......This is basically what the Futurity
Committee thought would happen...people would possibly show twice, but despite
the
ability to show in as many regions as desired, very few would show more
than that.
OK...a little more data......Of the 37 dogs that were shown more than
once, 8 dogs that were first defeated in a class or in winners, won a ticket
to
the National in a subsequent show. So 8 of the possible 72 dogs (8 dogs
per region x 9 regions) that qualify for the National finals were defeated
at a prior Futurity......Does that bother you? It does some people....A
couple of things to consider along that line....All 36 Reserve Fut/Mat have
been defeated.....and if you REALLY want to be a purist, the 18 Best
Opposites were defeated too. Only the regional Best in Futurity and Maturity
have
not been defeated (if we are showing only once)......Something to think
about! LOL
So..........please offer your opinons after thinking about the above
information. The Futurity Committee appreciates your feedback!
