Carol, I nominate but rarely show (my dogs that is...co-owned dogs have
been shown).
Over the years, it seems that the Futurity has taken on all of the drama of
a mini-national. Many "contenders" go to camp. The puppies at 7-8-10
months look like seasoned pros...so to be in the hunt, they all should really.
At that age, I want a puppy to be a puppy. I don't want to have to send
them away. Cost is an issue if you start adding 2 months at camp, a few
shows under their belt then a Futurity cluster. And for what????
Then we have the great handler conflict. Who is taking who? Which
handler can take which dog under whom? What if it doesn't all match????
OMG!!!!!
I've finished a few who were entered and not shown in their Futurity, then
not bothered w/ their Maturity because locally, maybe the judge wasn't
'right" and at that point, who wants a finished CH dumped?
To me, all of the fun of a "puppy match" is gone.
Soooooooooo......I selectively show a youngster, let them have fun (hopping
and skipping is fun, but not always the best look <G>), pick my judges
because I want it to be a really good experience and if I see a judge who will
put a deserving baby up, so much the better, (and not mind the tail
wagging and attempt at a kiss when showing teeth, lol), wait for them to grow
up
and be ready to win, get them done and usually pass on the F & Ms.
