Hi Kathy,
I noticed that but found if you don't press down too hard, you can avoid
this. I lost hardly any guard hairs - only undercoat.

No, because if you look closely at the underside, you'll see that you can
actually "cut" the coat. You may not notice it now, but when their summer
coat
comes in, could be you've taken off the tips of some guard hairs or made
"holes" in the coat where you didn't want dips.
Now, you can do the same type of damage with a shedding blade or rake used
too aggressively, which is why I don't use those either. (You'll find
various
trimming combs in most tack boxes for the occasional cowlick...or if
someone
wants to "fix" a croup or "elongate" a neck...same principle.) I guess if
it's a housedog or someone's pet it might not matter, but I still do it the
old
fashioned way; warm baths and a super strong blower, a lot of hand work and
the occasional greyhound style comb.
