Having read through some of the posts talking about misshaps while at the national (some funny, some a bit scarey) it brought to mind my experience at the Scottsdale National. I had agreed to drive Bob and Carol Moores van to Scottsdale with the dogs, and Cathy. Now Cathy had been sick all night before the morning we left, I can only guess why (things that make you go hmmmmm), and I had spent the night, after being on emergency call all night and a late night at the clinic, packing and getting ready to go, so neither of us had any sleep when we started out. Cathy asked if I could start the drive out, so I figured ok, no problem. I got out in the middle of nowhere Texas, and decided that I could go no further, so I woke Cathy and turned the driving over to her. I would swear that she got maybe 20 miles (I know further but it sure felt like 20 miles) before she wakes me up and turns the driving over to me. I got as far as El Paso before she took over again. Now Magic was allowed to ride loose in the van and had a comfy spot prepaired for him. I am sound asleep in the passenger seat when Magic apparently decided that it was time to accept me into his inner circle. I am rudely awakened by Magic, his elbows in my stomach, and his nose in my face, and Cathy laughing so hard I thought she would have to pull over. She told me that Magic had spent the last 15 or 20 minutes putting his head under my hand, only to have me pick it back up and place it on the arm rest. What woke me was his DEMAND that I pay some attention to him. One of the things that I had to do after getting to Scottsdale was pick Bob and Wendy up at the Pheonix airport... easy enough. So off I go, following the overhead signs that said "Arrivals". Unfortunately I followed the signs right into the hertz rental car return. It wouldnt have been so bad except that across the driveway into the parking garage there were spike strips, and just beyond that a swinging bar that said "if you hit this you're too tall". Sure enough I hit it, AFTER I crossed the spike strip. Well I was in quite a pickle. So I stuck my head out the van window, looked up to make sure that I didnt hit anything and SLOWLY proceeded into the garage to find someone to help get me out. I got a good ways into the garage when I see the attendant running out of the little booth waving his arms and shouting. When he got to me, I told him what my problem was and he called airport security... I thought, Oh great now I get to talk to the air cops. After about an hour and a half... or more, the air cops come up with a plan to get me out. Mind you Bob and Wendy arrived over an hour before. Security got me turned around, placed 2 huge metal plates over the spike strips, and stopped all traffic coming into the airport so that I could drive out the entrance of the rental car garage, make a huge U turn driving over the plastic sticks that stick up to keep you in the lane, and go on down to the arrival area. Then I spent another 2 hours driving in circles around the Pheonix airport looking for Bob and Wendy, who had gotten tired of waiting while I worked on getting out of the parking garage, called Bobs son to pick them up, and were already at the hotel. Needless to say, when someone needs to be picked up at the airport, I am the LAST person that is sent to do it.
