I tend to be rather positive with people - and by the time I am done having a
wonderful time with them, they are happy they have a nice dog but are
reconsidering the cost of everything. I suggest that they ask their vet for a
price list - and I know most of the companion vets here will go ballistic at
the thought of anyone breeding their bitch. I just casually mention the
c-sections, the testing, the sleepless nights, the cost of food, the messes to
clean up, etc. But all the time I explain that if you have the passion to breed
quality dogs and the will to raise them properly, socialize them properly,
etc, then it is wonderful. Usually before I am done, they are pretty sure they
don't want to do this.
I never want to make people feel their dog is inferior because if they love
their dog, it certainly is a good dog for them. But they do need to hear about
the reality of breeding.

They don't realize that "princess" may need a c-section, or a trip to an ER
vet on a Sunday in the rain at 2 am .
Nearly all, re-think the position and decide maybe a puppy instead is a good
idea.
I would rather try to keep a new person interested, but educated.? I found
out long ago, that if a breeder or stud owner insults someone , they just go
somewhere else.
I couldn't agree more.? I run into that person at almost every AB dog show.?
They want to breed Princess so they can have one of her puppies, etc.....
I first ask Princess age and if she's had her hips/elbws x-rayed and OFA'd.?
Then, I ask about her pedigree and her breeder.? Most have no clue what I am
talking about.? Since I have mostly bitches, I go on to explain how much money
I invest into each breeding.? Pre-breding testing for brucellosis and such,
progesterone, then ultrasounds and all the stuff needed to do it right.? Then,
there is the extra feeding during pregnancy, whelping and nursing.? Unexpected
costs, like a c-section or fading pups.? The cost of raising the pups for 8-10
weeks before they sell them.? And, what happens if you have no buyers.? Are
they willing to give away the pups?? I then give them my business card.?
I have yet to get a call from any of these folks.? Yes, they may have gone
elsewhere, but at least I gave them something to think about.? And, maybe, a
bit of education.
I dn't think I am being elitist.? If these owners stepped up and provided the
testing, pedigree info and were willing to acknowledge the expenses involved in
having a litter, I think I would take them more seriously.? But, once the $$
become involved in breeding,they usually change their minds :-)
