Motley Jr. told a judge he was drinking and blacked out, leaving him little memory of dragging his dog behind his car last August. Although the old, 85-pound male German Shepherd survived its initial injuries - all four legs were scraped to the bone in several spots - it has since been euthanized. On Monday, Genesee Circuit Judge Judith A. Fullerton sentenced Motley to 3 years' probation, 180 days in the Genesee County Jail and 500 hours of community service work at the Genesee County Humane Society or Genesee County Animal Control. Motley, 57, of Flint pleaded no contest to killing or torturing animals, a 4-year felony. He told police he dragged the animal because he was "tired of that (expletive) running away." Police said the incident occurred about 2 p.m. Aug. 16, when residents and an off-duty police officer saw Motley dragging the dog behind his car on E. Baltimore Boulevard near N. Saginaw Street. They said the dog was secured to Motley's truck with a 5-foot-long leash. Flint police Sgt. Poriot Dye earlier said the dog was taken from Motley and had recovered from its injuries and had been adopted. But Assistant County Prosecutor Janet McLaren told Fullerton the dog was later put to sleep for humane reasons. She urged Fullerton to jail Motley for his "erratic ... (and) dangerous" behavior. Attorney Amy Kline, who represented Motley, said her client became an alcoholic after suffering post-traumatic stress syndrome from serving in Vietnam. She said he is being treated at the veterans hospital in Saginaw. Witnesses said the incident sickened them. They said the dog was having a difficult time running and fell at least once. Several people confronted Motley, who told one woman to "mind your own business." *** Donna Jacot,ArDeJay ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2006.
