Die Gross mutter was standing on the front porch on a beautiful Autumn day,
looking up at the sky.
“What are you watching, Gross mutter?” I inquired. “Please don’t get a stiff
neck looking Heavenward for such a long time.”
“I am a bird watcher, Liebchen”, she answered. “I am watching to see flocks of
Ganse flying South because die Schnee will fall in flakes soon.”
I mused that die Gross mutter hadn’t always been so interested in birds, yet
here she was, for hours, head tilted towards the clouds.
“What are you exactly watching for, dear Gross mutter, besides die Ganse, I
wondered?
She responded, “To see if a there is a single Blue Jay flying with all those
Geese, Liebchen.”
Then she told me, in perfect English: “Birds of a Feather Flock together.”
Sometimes I am a Dumme Kopf.
