Every breeder is different in how they follow their vision.
We have never kept a coat to show or breed....and we have very plush coats that
do NOT carry the coat factor
and have had average to 'slick' coats that DO carry the coat factor over the
years.
Since I find long coats in general to be too soft coated, I don't see how they
can improve a GSD coat?
I'm not saying I would never breed to a coat....because I would as long as one
did not carry the coat factor....
( and someone else owned it <G> ) but I would never USE a coat to IMPROVE
coats??
You are right.....same with teeth.
Also, don't forget....we have had at least TWO dogs that had a missing tooth
that were Grand Victors.
AND......they never required a "missing tooth" class at the National........

I still contend that we purposely use coats in our breeding programs to improve
on dry coats. We don' t use dogs with missing teeth to improve dentition. I
think that is a significant difference.

That's the beauty of the Standard....and freedom. Except for DQ....YOU
decide what you want to compete with. You are competing against a Breed
Standard and have to make the decision on what to show, where to
show and who to show under ( freedom)
The Judge makes the final decision on who wins ( accountability and
responsibility ).
Breeders make the decision on what to breed. ( vision and responsibility )
IF you want a class for long coats....do you also want classes also for missing
teeth., or an unlevel topline,
or any other fault according to the Standard? Faults of gait are often
predominate.......at every show...
We all compete with a dog with a flaw, a fault..a not preferred...an
undesirable....there is no perfect dog.

Why would anyone show a long coat at nationals without a separate class? Except
in rare cases, judges see the coat and immediately disregard. With the level of
quality without a long coat shown at nationals, why would anyone put a beloved
animal out there? Fewer people that have any reason to enter the national. We
continue to shrink.

You can show a long coat at the National....there is just no more specific
classes for a specific fault! YAAAAAAAAAAAY! As it was it almost seemed
like "showcasing" a particular fault. <G>
You can show a dog with any fault at any show including our National. You
just cannot show a dog with a DISQUALIFYING fault. THAT is the POINT of a DQ.
You can even win with a dog with a fault....and you can breed a dog with a
fault. Some faults are s minor on a magnificent animal that they can and do
win......including coats. What most of us did object to was to have extra
classes for a fault!! Almost like 'showcasing' a fault....and It just
added to the length of the National...and cost and time.
Since we are so concerned about LOSS for the Club and our National......every
aspect of loss should be looked at including length, rather than make the
National site unattainable for many. Hopefully this is a good start.

Ok, I am confused. If you are allowed to show a coated dog in the shows why
are u not allowed to show at the Nationals?

I was happy to get the latest information from the BOD. Is it enough? Are we
allowed to know more? It makes me think of the chorus of this song:
"The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!
The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire!
We don't need no water, let the mf burn,
Burn mf, burn.
No coat class at the NATIONAL? Thank you.
