Hi Brenda, I really couldn't tell you if it would be a lack of carbohydrates without knowing your bitch's diet. If she is being fed commercial food, then she is probably receiving more than enough carbs. The only exception would be some of the new extremely high protein and fat foods, such as Innova Evo, Raw Instinct, etc. If you happen to add raw meat to your bitch's diet, then lack of carbs could be a problem. For example, an average amount of carbs in dry dog food is about 40% . Diets with higher protein, such as 30% protein and 20% fat contain about 30% carbs. Let's say that you feed a bitch 2 cups of ground meat and 2 cups of dog food per day. To simplify, we'll say that there are 4 cups of food per pound of dry dog food. So basically you would be cutting the carbs in half- to only about 20%, which seems to cause reproductive difficulties. That was my own mistake years ago. I had a cheap source of ground chicken, so my bitches got 2 cups of meat and 2 cups (or less) of dog food. I couldn't get them pregnant, and the ones that did, did not carry their puppies full term. Needless to say, very heartbreaking, and I lost my entire line before I figured it out. I finally found an article about embryos and statements were made that embryos grow strictly on carbohydrates during their early growth stages. I made the connection, and then made changes to my bitches diets, and that seemed to cure the problem. I'm not saying that this will help every bitch, but if you feed a lot of meat, it is worth a try. I still feed my dogs meat, but just less to the bitches I would want to breed. My own bitches now get about three cups of dog food plus a raw chicken back every night. They seem to be cycling normally on this, although I haven't tried breeding any of them. I talked about this on the list a couple years ago, and Melissa Campbell and a few others talked about how their bitches stopped cycling on a 100% raw diet. Syd Mailberg commented that perhaps this is the reason that only the Alpha wolves in the pack reproduce. They get access to carbs in their prey's digestive system, and the other pack members don't. So if you do feed a lot of raw meat, then it could be a problem of not enough carbs. Otherwise, there is really no telling why your bitch doesn't come into season. Thyroid is a common cause, but obviously your bitch is normal in that respect. Perhaps if T3 or T4 were bording on low-normal, it might be helpful to medicate her, and see if that helped at all. Hope all of this info has been helpful! We had thyroid checked, had other blood work done and x-ray to see if anything was wrong with her ovaries. Everything looks fine. Maybe it could be the lack of carboyhydrates. What can you advise or tel me about this.?? thanks...... Brenda kebre1@xxxxxxx _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger!
