California's SB 2110, billed erroneously as solely a prohibition against open-field coursing with sighthounds, goes a lot, lot further than that. Besides skating on the very thin edge of BSL for all sighthounds, it threatens beagle, dachshund, and Basset field trials. That gets AKC's attention--all those scent hound registrations, and after all, those little guys don't kill anything like those nasty sighthounds (with their much lower registrations). But check out the following post from the Virginia Hunting Dog Owners Association. SB 2110, if enacted, will sweep up the all the retriever, pointer, and flushing dog trials into its net. It's not enough for AKC to let California screw the sighthounds, but they have to pull everyone else down with them? This is an extremely dangerous position for AKC to take. AKC stayed silent on sighthound live coursing and only objected when hound trialing "which in no way threaten the native rabbits..." were included. That position isolates foxhounds and their trials. In addition, it sets up retriever, flushing dog and pointing dog trialers, all of whom kill game birds. Is AKC going to argue later that the other trials kill only purchased, non-native birds and that's O.K.? That's not true and even if it were it's certainly not OK with HSUS. Someone needs to shake them and turn them around. If a sport/dog event is legal and requires a state hunting license, dammit defend it and stop parsing definitions! AKC pulled the same stunt back in 2003-2004 on the HSUS Sacramento hound hunting ban, choosing to interpret its scope to competitions and staying silent on hunting per se. Wayne Pacelle was personally involved then and is again. This wouldn't happen if anyone in AKC's top management or on the Board had any experience in sporting dogs or hunting hounds and they weren't so blasted busy trying to placate every animal rightist complaint. This stance potentially cripples at least five other large test or trial sanctioning groups. Hunting breeds are being mishandled or sold out again and they represent 40+/-% of all AKC registrations, even more of UKC's. It's a continuing disgrace.
