Hi Barb -
I enjoy reading your blog (my mom does a daily blog too about the Dals, shows,
her fish and life in general)...
I come from a breed where most of the dogs that are finished are done so
breeder-owner-handled. And novices can do it too. My specialty winning bitch I
finished last weekend has a brother who has two specialty majors
novice-owner-handled.
I have a nice GSD bitch sitting at home who deserves to finish, but it would
kill me to send her out with a handler and I know I can't do it myself - nor
can I afford it.... It's a shame when a great breed like GSDs is strictly known
as a handler breed.. Owners SHOULD be able to do it themselves... That's one of
the reasons there are very few new folks in GSDs - people get into showing
because they can do it themselves - why get a breed where you have to pay
someone to show your dog... Very frustrating.
I figure I have finished probably 50 some Dals, 20 some Flat-Coats (several
from BBEx) and several other misc. Sporting dogs - yet I cannot finish my own
GSD.. Such a waste...
Guess that's life and I will continue to owner-handle the Dals and the FCRs and
enjoy my GSDs as pets and performance dogs.
