From my all breed club delegate that she received from Jim Crowley. ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim Crowley <mailto:JXC@xxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, July 29, 2009 7:50 AM I would like to clear up apparent misunderstandings that are circulating regarding the status of the AKC Library and Archives, both of which are my responsibility. As the Delegates have been advised for some time in the quarterly financial reports, there is a concern about the future of both core and alternate revenue. To ensure the healthy future of both AKC and the Sport, management is looking at every possible revenue source and cost saving. Every department and program has been reviewed in terms of benefit to the constituents, efficiency, and staffing levels. As to the Library and Archives: The AKC Library The AKC Library was started in 1934, and AKC has every intention of preserving and maintaining this valuable asset and resource. The Library is NOT being closed. It will be available to researchers and to the public just as it has always been. The Library information and catalog continue to appear on the AKC web site, and I will be the contact person given. What has changed is that there will be no full time employee sitting in the library every day. The usage of the Library has steadily declined in recent years, undoubtedly due to information now readily available on the internet in general and the AKC web site in particular. Days, and in some cases weeks go by without anyone, other than AKC NY employees visiting the Library. At one point, three employees were needed in the Library. This was reduced to two, and then to one, as usage fell. It is now apparent that it makes little sense to maintain a full time operation, which few use only occasionally, when the same level of service can be provided on an as needed basis for a fraction of the cost. The 18,000 volumes in the Library will always be maintained. The Library will also continue to accept donations. The AKC Archives There has been absolutely no change in the status of the AKC Archives, and none is planned. If anything, programs in this area will be expanded. Among the things that distinguish AKC from all other registries in the US is its long history and unique traditions. These are not only being memorialized and preserved by our archivist, but they are being made readily available through digitization and by allowing access on the AKC web site. There will also continue to be a concerted effort to work with our clubs, and particularly our Parent Clubs, to preserve their history, and the history and development of their wonderful breeds. I do appreciate the Delegates that contacted me for the facts, when the rumors began, particularly about the AKC Archives. To clear up the inevitable misinformation, feel free to pass on or to cross-post this communication.
