Bateson Inquiry into dog breeding

The independent inquiry into dog breeding commissioned jointly by the

Dogs Trust (the UK's largest canine welfare organisation) and the

Kennel Club has been published today. The report, written by the eminent

Zoologist Professor Patrick Bateson FRS of the University of Cambridge

The report is the last of three to be published as a result of the

screening of the documentary "Pedigree Dogs Exposed" and I

suspect the Kennel Club may be regretting commissioning it. The other

two were published by the RSPCA and The Associate parliamenary group for

animal welfare



This is a must read for anybody who owns or breeds dogs and the section

on genetics is particularly pertinent.

Those of you who have carried out or continue to carry out the

traditional methods of breeding show dogs may find this uncomfortable

reading. The link between inbreeding, immune system impairment and its

effect on the prevalence of cancer may be of particular interest given

the prevalence of cancer in our breed.
