I agree with Carolyn and Jen. I know Pam is worth every penny she is paid
and more, and I find the web page to be an expense of doing business. It
represents our club and takes in no money, so it has to be just considered
an expense. At the National we lose money on ticket sales, but make up for
it with entry fees. We lose money on tickets for the airlines for our board
members, but make up for it with entry fees at the National. So long as
there is some sort of balance it is reasonable.
What I don't agree with is the SV and the WDA before it. Everyone knew
hosting the World Trials was a mistake. No one would stand up and cancel it.
Instead we took over a $100,000 loss. On top of that, we ended up with a law
suit, and I have no idea how much that cost. As a lawyer I advocated
breaking the contract, but no one wanted to do that. Instead we took the
losses.
For years the GSDCA supported the WDA, and I kept asking when it would
support itself. It never did. The GSDCA donated money to them each year,
while they laughed at us, and never used American bred German shepherds to
compete. This gave us a certain reputation around the world.
I know Carmen is a supporter of the SV, and before that the WDA. But, if
they continue to be an expense of the GSDCA, we need to justify that. If
those costs require the inconvenience to the membership of St. Louis, we need
to ask the membership if they want to continue to support those activities.
Not everything the club does has to earn income, but it should either be
considered an expense of the GSDCA, or if it could support itself, do so.
I suggested we remove the connection with the WDA years ago. No one
listened to me.
That shows the wisdom of our Board at that time. Maybe it is time for the
new board to consider our continue expenditure to support the SV, or maybe
they can support themselves, and contribute to the GSDCA to join us at the
National.
