I know it's a tough situation for the Futurities and the "appearance" of the
Futurity system
failing.
Those who consider them just a 'Match' always point out how small they are
getting.....but
is it any different than our shows now?? One class at a Specialty used to be
larger than
most of our current Specialty and All Breed shows. It's a simple fact.
Granted....you do not earn AKC points at a Futurity....but the original idea
was great, and a
way for breeders to show off their litters and breedings and to encourage
participation from
breeders and for all of us to see different breedings or litters competing.
Has that changed??
If the shows and majors are a lot smaller.....and we have less Exhibitors and
Breeders....how
can we possibly expect the Futurities to fare any better.....??
As we dwindle in numbers....even the Red Book will become a lot smaller...so do
we give up
on the Red Book...or our R.O.M. system, or put the Red Book out every other
year or cut back
on issues? Hopefully not.
I sure have no answers....but I do know the Futurities themselves are NOT the
problem. It's
the whole show society and venue that is beginning to fail as are all of us in
age and numbers
and willingness to throw money and time and work into it much longer.
Adding up the total of one show weekend or Futurity weekend...and you are
looking at the real
problem.

Does anyone have idea;s on the BIG elephant in the room? (THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE
WINNERS, DOGS, OR JUDGES).
Futurity today 10 males shown and 9 bitches shown. Maturity today 10 males
shown and 9 bitches shown.
This results in 8 animals being eligible to attend our National. I have seen
most of the winners; very worthy. Does our current
system make sense?
