The problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to dumb, spooky
champions and ugly working dogs. While I admit that this is an over
generalization, and certainly not true of all champions or all working dogs, I
am looking for a beautiful, correct-to-the-standard dog, who demonstrates
working ability in one or more competitive venues. I am looking for this
combination of traits because, to me, this is what a German Shepherd is....a
beautiful (as defined by the standard) working dog. I want to see all of those
qualities in the same dog regardless of whether the dog is competing in the
conformation or working venues. This year's Winners Dog at the National (AOE
Sel Ch Anne Isle's Promise Keeper TC TD, aka Tucker) personifies exactly what I
am talking about, and I can't wait to breed one of my working conformation
champions to him. This is the quality of dog I want to see whether I am
sitting outside the conformation or the obedience
ring. I do not want to see some abomination of the standard in either place,
and especially not at the National!
