AMEN to the flooring. We brought a beautiful and extreme moving bitch for Best
of Breed competition in St Louis. The first time we got her out to practice on
the floor she hung her head and crouched like she was walking on ice. She
started drooling. A long time breeder that saw her in her new act said she had
vertigo. (There is a weird pattern in the flooring and with the lights
reflecting) We were devastated. It was all Pat could talk about. We took her
on the flooring every chance we got but didn’t hold out much hope for Saturday
competition. Another friend told us to pull her ears to open up her tubes and
she won’t get the sick feeling on the floor. Well, of course, we were pulling
her ears like crazy. Bill Basu was her handler. He had bought a super long
lead to show off her effortless side gait. We started Tuesday and everyday she
was on the floor, by Friday we were gaining hope. We had enough faith to put
her in Breed competition Saturday. She did good.

Having judged on that floor I can tell you it's terrible. You get a bad
reflection up from the light gray floor, the glare of the lighting down and
then the white drapes in between. When the ring is not opened up you can get
dizzy turning so much.
The PA system is another big problem.
It is unfair to the dogs, judges and handlers and owners. I had so many dogs
I could have done more with but they could not handle that floor. Think about
it. Most of our dogs are shown outside and I could tell felt uncomfortable.
Especially young dogs.
The problem is the seating. You would have to be outside everyday even in
inclement weather.
Tents would have to be set up. You could not have tiered seating so how many
people are going to buy seats if they can't see.? Just bring your own. Seating
is a good revenue source.
What would the vendors do? They could not be outside. Another source of
revenue gone. I am sure if it rained Purina would not want wet people and dogs
in and out to get food etc.
How would they do the videos?
See it's not just about the floor.
Gail Stieferman is doing an outstanding job and does not get enough credit.
Please take a moment and tell her instead of only communicating when
complaining and volunteer to help.

Pat and I will attend nationals until we are not able. Aside from the extra
time and money commitment traveling long distances, my heart longs for a
national on grass. Purina, to me, is like a glorified all breed show. Showing
our beautiful animals on anything other than grass is hard on my eyes. Maybe
it's just me

Evan, you wrote the following about not having two weeks to go to the
National? Not getting the two weeks unless you were going to walk.
When I was active in showing and living in Minnesota, I drove to the Atlanta,
Houston, and Burbank Nationals. All were a two day drive, one way. I endorsed
the concept of rotating from west to central to east. That means you probably
had one show that was local or a day away, a show 2 days drive away, and a show
that was 4 days drive you might skip or fly to. The people on the coasts would
have it worse with that third year, but those in the central US would be within
a 2 day drive for all locations.
As an aside, take a look at where the Atlanta and Burbank shows were held,
with Atlanta being worse as the building didn't have walls and it rained and it
was muddy. I don't know how we were able to afford the Astrodome and to me,
that was excessive. The show site should have a cap on it as a percentage of
revenue.
I had decided when the show was in St. Louis, I would attend, support the
board, but never show at a National again. You can't fly a dog into St. Louis,
and it is too far for me to drive when I can't take off two weeks from work.
