Is EPI genetic or caused by illness?

Laura, I appreciate the compliment, but I could not have expressed it any
better

than you have. Great summation.

I was hoping Morgan would've responded to this thread.  He is incredibly
knowledgeable on the subject.  I will provide an answer based only on my
experience with a severe EPI dog.

EPI is a condition in which the exocrine part of the pancreas shuts down.  The
exocrine system provides the digestive enzymes needed to break down food so the
nutrients can be absorbed by the dog.  When that doesn't work, the dog will
literally starve to death without intervention.

A raw diet is beneficial to an EPI dog as raw food required far less work for
the digestive system to break down and allows for more nutrients to be
absorbed.  I would recommend ground raw meat, bones and veggies.  Grains are
useless for an EPI dog.  Also, B12 will be depleted in an EPI dog and should
also be supplemented via capsules or injection, depending on severity.

Additional digestive enzymes are needed to break down the food for maximum
absorption.  The prescription meds didn't work for my girl and I chose to use
raw pancreas for the critical enzymes.

Each dog is different and what works for one may not work for others.  It is
trial by error.  Kibble stays in the digestive tract far longer than raw food
and breaks down slowly, so many EPI dogs will not be able to break it down and
recover any weight that has been lost.

Also, not trying to start a food war.  Just relating what I have learned.  My
girl was diagnosed at 3yrs of age with the MOST severe form of EPI.  She is
going on 11yrs old and while she suffers from other age related maladies, her
weight, coat and attitude are excellent.  One just needs to find what works
best

for their dog.
