I was told by a vet in Phoenix that the "normal" for GSDs would be considered affected in most other breeds. In other words... GSDs typically have lower enzyme count than most other breeds. What they would consider a normal count in a GSD would mean a dog in most other breeds would have EPI. Something to consider for sure.> I was told the same thing by a vet when I brought my 8-9 month old boy in after repeated soft stools. He would have one good one a day, and one very soft one. (I later found out that this is common in the beginning of EPI. My vet ran the TLI test and the score was 5.2, and he told me just what Ginger said.....that ALL GSD's score on the low side and that he was fine. I played games, changing foods for probably a couple of years before his stools got horrible and he was constantly ravenous. Knowing what these signs meant, I bought some Pancreatin 8x (equivalent to Viokase but much cheaper) from a vitamin store on line and I got him back on track. When the National was in Colorado (I think) the health foundation was requesting donors for an EPI study. They wanted dogs with EPI and older dogs without. I took two vials for blood, and submitted them when I got home: one for my 6+ yr. old EPI dog, and one for a 9+ yr. old healthy dog. My EPI dog scored .2!! However, surprisingly, my other dog scored a 5.2, and NEVER has soft stools. They said it was indicative of a dog that had pancreatitis attacks (of which she'd had none), so I'm still a bit confused. My boy with EPI is now going on 8 and requires a lot of enzymes, and my girl is still a healthy 10-1/2....constipated most of the time!! Go figure.....maybe the numbers go down with age anyway?? Has anyone else tested a healthy old dog and gotten really high numbers?? In fact, what are considered high for a GSD?
