Julie raises a very important point. Those of us who pursue performance titles
with our dogs have to pick and choose which sports we will do at which time.
The pursuit of all these titles entails weekends after weekends after weekends
and it truly does depend where you live. Up here in the North Country, I have
two agility trials per year (CKC) to choose from, 3 Tracking Tests, 2 Rally O
Trial Weekends, 3 Obedience Trial Weekends and 1 Conformation Show weekend and
no Herding weekends. To get anywhere where there is the possibility of regular
showing or trialling is a 5 hour drive for me. There are basically 11 workable
weekends in a year (up here we get winter rather early) and trying to fit
everything in is almost impossible. So it takes time and money and committment
to get titles on both ends. We do what we can with the time, money and
distance to travel.

Sara,

I never have seen you post where (what part of the country) you're actually
from.

You looked at one month of the Review. Look further. Check the Red Book for
lists of dual titled dogs. I personally have owned/trained 3 GSD champions who
have earned their PAMs. In case you aren't familiar with that, it requires a
dog to have an advanced title in at least one performance sport and also be
titled in 2 additional sports. There are other CH PAM dogs and other CHs with
advanced titles. Winners Dog from the national this year just recently got his
TDX and is training in agility.

Don't judge all American champions on titles that you're NOT seeing though,
Training dogs and then trialing them takes time & dedication & money. So does
showing dogs in the breed ring. Sometimes people have to choose what they want
to do with their time & money! I've been in GSDs for 25 years and although
I've had a limited number of dogs (which is why they've all had advanced
performance titles) I've never had trouble finding one that could play the
sports I choose. I just wish I had more TIME for all of them!!!

Right now I have 4 dogs of my own that are all being trained, trialed, and/or
shown in multiple sports. Only 2 of them are GSDs, but they all take time and
MONEY!!! For example, One of my dogs was entered a few weeks ago in Herding
Intermediate, after hearing from several people rumors about the sheep at that
trial facility, I decided to pull his entry (before closing) and spent the
money to go to a tracking seminar instead (which the weekend that I was at the
tracking seminar, I missed out on 3 days of agility with 3 of my dogs and a
breed show with one...decisions). My daughter is currently specialing and
doing Juniors with one of my dogs (not a GSD tho) which requires some choosing
where we're going to go in weekends since I'm also showing that same dog in
agility... Again, all of which takes time and more MONEY.

I also co-own a wonderful bitch (breed champion who was HIT in herding at the
national this year) that I would like to get ready for more herding, but she's
also being worked in rally & obedience by one of her other owners....and we
would like to breed her this year but when we do, we'll lose about another 6
months of training. Sometimes you have to balance what you're doing and
sometimes you just have to make hard decisions and choose what's important to
you at the time.
