THIS IS SO SAD.......................Can anyone help out here? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Police find a man with dozens of dogs crammed into a school bus, wallowing in their own waste. Bennington Police say when they picked him up, the man was living in an old school bus with dozens of dogs, kept in some of the worst conditions imaginable. "The conditions with the urine dripping out of the side of the bus...it was disgusting," says Bennington Police Lt. Paul Doucette. Investigators counted 32 German Shepherds in 52-year-old Larry Mason's bus. Some of them were chained to the outside of the vehicle. Others were roaming inside the vehicle, which was soiled with urine and feces. Mason has been charged with animal cruelty, and authorities in his native New Hampshire want to talk to him about complaints there. Meantime, police have been working around the clock to find shelters to take all the dogs and nurse them back to health. 32 German Shepherds, ranging in age from seven-months to 10-years, all lived inside the bus. Police say more than 20 dog crates stuffed into school bus seats, chewed and caked with feces, are the only homes they knew. "The conditions were deplorable, the smell of urine and feces was evident," Lt. Doucette said. "Actually, the bus was leaking some fluids, and when animal control arrived, we were able to verify that the fluid leaking was actually urine." Mason told police he was traveling west from New Hampshire when he stopped at the Top Notch Diner in Bennington, where a passerby noticed the packed-in dogs and called police. "Certainly not nearly enough food to maintain 32 dogs that we removed from the bus," says Lt. Doucette. "There were some bowls of water in some of the crates, (but) the problem was there was feces on some of the bowls...there was matted fur in the water." The dogs are now in protective custody, spread out between shelters or kennels across the city. No one shelter could hold them all; recovering from sores, untreated broken bones, and malnutrition. Police say some of the dogs were in pretty rough shape. Some of the dogs had matted fur with feces matted into the fur. They also smelled like urine. None of the dogs are spayed or neutered. "It seems like they had been in the crate for way too long," says Lt. Doucette. Animal Control Officer Chris Crawford says, "dogs need love, groceries, shelter and water, it's as simple as that. That's the way I feel, but these guys, they break my heart." Police say Mason used a plywood board as a makeshift bed, living alongside his pack of dogs. The number of dogs started out at 32; but since they seized the animals, Animal Control has learned Mason may have left one behind earlier Tuesday afternoon at the Somerset Reservoir. They are currently trying to track down that dog. Also, Tuesday night, one of the German Shepherds had puppies, making the total number 34. These dogs may, at some point, be up for adoption; but not yet. The dogs have been taken away from Mason, who has been charged with animal cruelty. But until that case is resolved in court, the dogs will be in protective custody. We will keep you updated on their situation. http://www.wten.com/Global/story.asp?S=5173831&nav=6uyN <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ============================================================================ POST is Copyrighted 2006.
