I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. I judge Dobes, Boxer

closely.

Great Danes did double handling ,long before GSDs. Our method of judging has
changed in 50 yrs. There was a time when you just walked,and/or gaited for
many laps, maybe for as long as 1/2 hr at different speeds. There was even a
time when another handler could come in and relieve you--just ran in,grabbed
the lead ,and did his two laps--then the original handler would come back
,continuing on with the dog never stopping. Many times the judge would just
sit
down and not even look at the dogs, while the dogs were circling the ring I
remember ( the first time in Dallas) I was handling one of Ernie Loeb's males
at the National. Virginia McCoy was helping me--taking her two laps.then I
took over again, and then she came in again, and ended up being on the dog when
he
won. This was a frequent occurrence. We all helped each other. At that
period of time of judging, the dog was posed by walking into the stance with
bait.
I always had liver in my pockets or mouth No double handling. needed . You
posed your dog,got examined then gaited. gaited and gaited some more. I often
sent my owners up in the bleachers to not distract the dog. I wanted the
dogs full attention. When the AKC stopped the interchanging of handlers,it
wasn't because of GSD's but because of the "grandstanding" of well known all
breed
handlers, walking into the ring at the last minute,to take over a dog,and
winning. But it sure affected our method of handling, both in gaiting, and
posing.
