We keep the trash cans locked. We change the locks every three months, as
they learn to pick the old ones. We also do a search every few weeks to make
sure there are no lock picks in the dog houses. We also have to do a search
of each dog on a weekly basis as they try to hide keys and other wire that
they can use to overcome our locks in their coats.
Also, we are careful to make sure they don't find explosives, as then tend
to try to blow up the cookie jars. So, we have a weapon sniffing cat that comes
by every month to scan for explosives. We make the dogs stand outside while
mittens goes through their stuff. It is our weekly "cat scan".
We do check for stethoscopes as they try to pick the locks, and it is easier
to keep them away from the equipment, so that they can't find out the
combinations.
It works for us. Only the really smart ones get to the trash.
