Okay. I'm not a vet, so I'll acknowledge that this is
certainly possible. I'm not arguing that it *can't*
happen. However, I'll stand by my opinion that "normal,
healthy" dogs are pretty darned sturdy and not as easily
affected by "germs" as unhealthy ones might be.
"Unhealthy" could be immune-compromised animals and
cancer, kidney, liver, diabetic or tick-borne disease
patients, for example, as well as the extremely young or
elderly. It could also be any already starved and/or
unhealthy or unthrifty animals such as you might find with
strays at the pound or those taken in by rescue. All I'm
saying is that our dogs guts don't work the same as ours
do. They have stronger stomach acids that can handle
things that would either kill us outright or make us
violently ill. That's why they can eat a whole raw chicken
or a dead, decaying rabbit and be just fine and you
cannot. That's also why they can lick their butts and eat
their own poop and we have to wash our hands after we use
the bathroom, change the kitty litter or clean up a poopy
baby's diaper.
Look. Bottom line... you have to be your dogs' advocate
and make your own choices based upon your common sense,
gut instincts and scientific fact. Just don't freak out
and get carried away by mass hysteria and rumors.
