Cornell University is saying IV support (ringers lactate) with Cephalaxin for the secondary and very quick acting pnuemonia that seems to be the major problem. Ordinarily you would never treat a virus with an antibiotic, but the influenza in, and of itself, is not the problem, it is the PNUEMONIA that is a side affect that is so bad. Many times they are saying by the time you catch the cough, or notice the depression the dog is loaded with pnuemonia. Tamiflu may also be effective in anecdotal uses, it is however, a human drug, not approved for dogs, but some vets that I know have used it with good success.
