I agree with just about all of your points Kathy & Barbara.? However, any of
these additions or requirements would mean a huge overhaul at AKC.? From what I
know, we cannot add on requirements for an AKC win - i.e. Best of Breed or Best
of Opp Sex at our National.?? As we all know it is not easy to change anything
at AKC....

Barbara
You come up with very compelling questions. Let's look at GV in the context
of "Select One" . One chosen amongst
Select contenders on that day. I don't feel the GV should have any other
requirements that all Select competitors aren't asked.
HOWEVER, YES, I think our selects, esp the males, because of their genetic
impact, should have PROGENY
that are present at the show. I feel the males in particular should have
litters , at least three, from two different bitches,
that represent the sire , during the Specials class. All too often we see
Selects go up that have NOT proven themselves as
stud dogs, either because they are too young, or they simply ARE NOT
GENETICALLY PRE-POTENT ENOUGH TO
GIVE YOU CONSISTENCY/ QUALITY IN THEIR PROGENY. People rush to breed to the
dogs, having NO idea what they may get,
or having no idea what the dog has done, good or bad in siring ,
previously. Progeny groups on exhibition, is not much to ask.
Also what about age? I believe that Selects male or female MUST be at
least 4 years old......it is no good to award a Select title
to a dog or a line where it is not uncommon for them to die before the age
of four...or come apart physically at 4 and 5 due to faulty
structure. It sets the breed back. Award dogs that at least live long
enough to see how they look/ perform as mature adults.
I would make a full on TC , at the very least, MANDATORY for any dog/ bitch
desiring a Select title. Again, to award a dog that
rolls its eyes, or stands quivering , is an injustice to the breed, and
injurious to us, genetically....it happens...the fish-eyed selects,
and we all know it.

Finally MANDATORY DRUG AND DYE TESTING IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE SPECIALS
CLASS FOR ANY DOG OR BITCH
COMPETING. I am so sick of people openly dyeing dogs, (and not very well
to boot) and the ORANGE and PINK abominations we see.....I am sick of
listening to
people wonder why the litter of puppies they just got are not black and red
, as the sire sure seemed to be...but black and white or black and
cream.
.....ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE DYES...... I guarantee it would change
the face of the breed OVERNIGHT. If people
protest (and you would have to wonder, why?) then they don't have to enter.
But at our BIGGEST SHOW, to crown our ostensibly BEST dogs...in our most
important class.....WE SHOULD GET HONESTY, AND A TRUE REPRESENTATION OF WHAT
WE ARE SEEING.

These, to me, IMHO are the very LEAST I would like to see . But it would
take courage and a real desire to make changes in our requirements, by those
who set the requirements.
I hope I see it come to pass in my lifetime.
