I always understood that this type of mange was hereditary (in puppies), as their immune systems were compromised. I also understood that the mites were on EVERY dog, but the ones with poorer immune systems were affected. Maybe they were fighting infection, worms-- there are a thousand reasons for a compromised immune system. In an older dog, WE could be the problem. We inundate our dogs with POISONS (commercial wormers, chemical flea and tick preventatives, unnecessary shots, et al) and we wonder why our dogs aren't as thrifty as they were 30 years ago? Come on! Quite awhile ago, I had demodectic mange in 3 puppies out of a litter of 7. I treated their faces with Goodwinol Ointment (Google it) and colloidal silver, which is an immune booster. Gone in a couple days, (never to return.) I don't know the answer--I only know what worked for me.
