Hi Ellen, I guess I would have to moderate your statement "not breed any dog
that has produced any sign of Demodex in any given litter.". All dogs carry
the demodex mite and yes, it can flair up indicating an auto-immune
problem..but.. there are many, many dogs that will exhibit localized spots as
young dogs (sometimes due to stress) that clear up never to appear again. Are
you saying that this should indicate never breeding into that line again? The
situation you are dealing with is totally heartbreaking and of course breeding
that animal would be wrong and I would most likely look at the parents as well
and seriously question breeding them. Unless I am unaware of something, most
vets consider localized and generalized demodex as almost two separate problems
with two separate prognoses(sp?). A young dog with the typical spot over the
eye or on the muzzle is not going to get the same treatment as the poor dog you
are caring for and in most cases that I have heard of,
will not develop into a generalized case unless, as you indicate there is a
serious auto-immiune problem. Regards, Cynthia

I have been caring for a P.B. rescued German Shepherd Dog for a year and a
half now that had such sever Demodex that you couldn't tell this dog was a
German Shepherd at first. This dog lives on oral Ivomec and Mitban dips and
constant monitoring by my Vet. So far we have been able to provide him with a
decent quality of life but for how long, who knows. We have flair ups all the
time. Any sign of Demodex indicates an autoimmune problem. Sadly Demodex
is not uncommon in our breed.
Breeders need to be responsible and not breed any dog that has produced any
sign of Demodex in any given litter. And remember it takes two to tango!
Always breed responsibly. Our breeds reputation counts on it!
Blessings to All,
