It sounds like you did a really good job. How many new members did you get and
did any of them express an interest in conformation? What was the biggest area
of interest from the new people? What did they want to learn about?

I know some on this list don't get the Review but in the October issue I
wrote an article (with input from our Board) about "What To Do When a
Regional Club Gets Tired" (will be glad to send copies of this article if
anyone didn't get it). Our club was on the brink of disbanding because
older members that worked for many years were tired; we needed new blood to
keep going and also a new Board. In June 2006 a new Board was formed with
myself as President; Mary Tropeck as VP/Treasurer; Jodi Bobin as Secretary;
and Tom Bobin, Vicki Burkey and Tammy Schaas sitting on the Board. When I
contacted Lew Bunch and others we got inspired by the "Encourage not
Discourage" motto. We decided to have a club picnic on Saturday night at a
4-day Cluster in August. We invited any GSD people that would listen to
us - LOL; many puppy buyers came; club members attended and even a couple
friends stopped by that weren't in our breed. Everyone brought a covered
dish (the food was out of this world), we had "bobbin for hot dogs" for the
puppies and dogs and then we set up a little ring to have a spur of the
moment "puppy match" judged by Amy Safdir. This was an absolute FUN
experience for everyone. We had two young brothers that took their puppy in
the ring and they were watching the exhibitor in front of them very closely
as to how to "stack" their puppy....then when Amy sent them around the ring,
the 2nd brother was doubling "inside" the ring !!! Now how cute is that???
Every puppy/dog that came was given a gift bag with a bandana, a bag of
treats, a toy and a "Certificate of Appreciation" with the dog's name,
signed and sealed with the official club seal.
We had a total of 33 members and guests and 16 dogs/puppies attending. What
was so great is that we met and brought new people into the breed; they were
interested in the GSD; yes, maybe not for showing but they all had good
questions about their dogs and wanted to meet others like them. Club
members with knowledge were there to answer questions and give some advice
when needed.
Our Board worked very hard for this day to be a success and it was not just
as a fund raiser but as a day to welcome new GSD people into "our" world.
It was all worthwhile to see how much these new people loved their GSDs and
we were able to be a part of their happiness.
