Everyone is bringing up valid points for why people aren't getting into the sport of showing dogs. WHAT IF we offered an intro to the show world kind of class. It would have to be a "fun" class with all gsds encouraged to participate---yes even the "pets" as some of you refer to those "other" dogs. It could be a family event with kids showing their dogs and everyone gets a ribbon and applause for being out there. Maybe balls and frisbees are a part of the fun and the ribbons (people DO like to win something). Picnic and social time too. This could be followed by the regular show classes. If we could get AKC to send an invitation to all registered gsds in a particular area it would encourage people to try it out. The show people could be the hosts and welcome the pet people and introduce them to how to groom and how to show off their dog's attributes. No discouraging "oh it's just a PET" kind of comments but celebration of the gsd. Just an idea that offers inclusion, introd uction, and family fun. Most people I know who love dogs know NOTHING about the show world--it is TOO separate.
