I want to make a couple of comments about the email sent from Roxann below.
I was at that show and attempted to talk with the Mother of that girl and
the girl herself, but others were offering their suggestions and I could
not get close.
It was a cold wet rainy day (Pacific Northwest) and this lovely 20
something young woman dressed in a thing blouse and skirt, soaking wet, was
in the ring with her dog. She appeared extremely thin and fragile and
ill-equipped to handle anything let alone a German Shepherd. The dog was a
disaster for the
conformation ring! One look at the two of them, brought tears. The Mother
was showing everyone the dogs "papers" and trying to convince them how good
the dog was, as she had been convinced. I know that some, like Ann Akerill
spent time with the Mother explaining the show ring to the mother and I
think several others did as well. The real problem came with the purchase
of this "show" dog....and I do feel there were kind and helpful people
around the
ring that day........it was a sad day indeed but I blame those that
misrepresented the potential of that dog and his potential future.
Also, I believe the mother said her cancer was in remission. Helen Franklin

Ok I will try this for the last time. To make my point I was at a show
where a young lady was showing for the first time. If I remember correctly
her dog was half german. She had never shown before but was doing her best.
Standing ring side the remarks people made I wanted to walk away and vomit.
I had been were she was knew how it felt. So after the show I went over and
talked to her and tried to help her with stacking (mind you I'm not that
great at stacking) and wondered if she had someone who could double for
her. This was two shows in one day. So when she went back in things worked
alittle better for her, but the remarks outside the ring did not change.
After that show her and her mother come over and talked to me. It was also
her dream to show her dog but what no one else knew was that she had cancer
and wanted to show and achieve her dream which could have been her last
one. I only hoped that those outside the ring would one day regret
 what they had done.
I also agree that the cost of showing is a lot. I maybe wrong but
maybe handlers should take the economy into consideration and make costs
more reasonable for those who travel far, fixed income or whatever. I
understand they also need to make money but when your booked for a show
with 4,5,6 clients and who knows how many dogs they are doing more then ok
when there payment comes in. If costs were more reasonable
maybe people could do more shows. (I can't complain I chose to entry shows
and pay a handler) Like I said I got lucky to have someone take me under
her wing and travel with me cutting some of those costs in half really
helps. Now because of circumstances I will not be showing a lot but I still
have dreams to full fill.
I think what I'm trying to say is it would be really nice if all
those experienced people showing would at least try to be kinder ring side
and help someone who may need the help or desire to show. I know not
everyone will listen or take your advice but do you stop showing if you
lose at one show.
I would also like to add I have met some very nice people and am
greatful for that. So we all should encourage not discourage people from
showing. I'm getting my young granddaughters ready to show in the ring
because they want to give it a try. I only hope that people are kind and
understand they ayoung ladies willing and wanting to learn. Not sure what I
would do if I heard something ring side about one of them.
Sorry about all the mistakes. Just had surgery and the meds and typing
are not working well together let alone trying to use this laptop. Thanks
for letting me share my opinion for what it's worth.
