You would be surprised Michelle. I used to wonder the same thing about my
boy Max. Everyone that knew him can tell you how sweet he was. He was sure
the world was put here just to admire and pet him. He loved crowds and was
in his element at dog shows, or any large crowd. He was not at all
territorial at home, or even in the car. If someone came to the front door
at home he greeted everyone like they came just to see him. I was sure he
would be helping the robbers out with the valuables! But one night when I
was at work he proved me wrong. I lived in Phoenix at the time. I had a job
setting up yard displays in the middle of the night for special occasions. I
would take Max with me. He would lay there on the back seat of the van and
just watch while I worked. One night I was in downtown Phoenix and had just
finished the set up and was taking the boxes back to the van when this drunk
"street person" (ie, bum) came staggering out of the bushes towards me. He
had a knife and was definitely intent on doing me harm. Max came out of that
van like the devil reincarnated! I barely recognized him. He was going to
have this guy for dinner! Scared the guy sober I think. He dropped the knife
and ran for his life. Max gave chase for about 20 feet and then came back.
I never doubted him after that.
