Knowledge is power...the more knowledge one has regarding the bloodlines
they are interested in, the better. An educated breeder, educated in the
specifics of our breed and in genetics, can only be a benefit to the German
Shepherd breed in the long run. Today, breeding decisions are initiated
based on information, misinformation, partial information, etc. What is
more frustrating than to conduct a breeding, only to discover demonstrated
issues in the offspring, that were known to exist in the lines but not
shared with all parties involved in the breeding or purchase of the
offspring.
DNA testing and the knowledge gleaned from it, if used correctly and for the
good of the breed, can increase the odds of producing animals that exhibit
the desired gene pool while minimizing those characteristics which would be
deemed undesirable. However, with all breakthrough technology, we need to
consider how this same knowledge might be used to the detriment of the
breed, to serve the greed in those who might exploit it for personal gain
over the good of the breed....not sure how that might occur, but there
always seems to be that side to the equation, which must be guarded against.
