Everytime I take mine in even for prelims they require either a microchip or
a tattoo.

Unless it has recently changed a dog does not have to be permanently id'd to
be ofa certified . That is only required if you want akc to acknowledge it
on the pedigree . Granted i don't keep up with the changes since i do not
any more
