[ SHOWGSD-L ] DM Testing

I would rather cut down a tree with a dull saw, then with no saw at all.
The DM test is but an indicator. If you breed a carrier to a carrier, you
can expect a problem, or not. If you breed free to free, so far from what
I have seen, you will not get a carrier or positive in the puppies.
I know some carriers are showing up with DM at necropsy. But, all that
means is that the bar is higher than we thought. What will finally give it
up is when we have a dog that tests positive for DM on the test, and never
shows up with it. That won't prove a thing, other than the dog died too
young. However, when we get a negative test and then the dog does show up with
DM, with a necropsy, we will have an answer.
As it stands today, each individual has to decide what to do with the test.
Having suffered with DM, owning the number one stud dog in the country
that may have had DM, and may have passed it on, (before the test was
available), I choose to use the test, avoid breeding DM into lines, and test
anything dog I am going to breed.
I am not a big time breeder, so that is not a big deal. However, I did
find a stud dog to use that tested negative for DM. I first picked the dog,
then checked on the test. Doing it the other way around would be a
problem, in my mind.
But, as a flaming liberal, let me remind everyone that you should do
whatever makes you happy.
