Actually, three different Shepherds have been best in show at Crufts...the first was bred and owned by Sheila Godden, of Kentwood Kennels...who also bred and showed top Cardigan Welsh Corgis. That was in 1965. The second was in 1969, and he, too, was British bred. Prince Hussein's dog, Swashbuckler, won in 1971, and I don't know where he was bred. Probably also in the UK, since foreign dogs couldn't get into the country, especially just for shows, until just the past couple of years. When the first two won, the breed was still called Alsatian over there. There was tons of excitement when the first one won in 1965...the Kentwood dogs were very well known there and the Cardigans were famous all over the world..
