Hi Barbara Cow hocks can be from loose ligamentation, sometimes as the dog gets older/stronger, it will straighten out. A lot of puppies with the extreme rears esp seem predisposed to it, and to a large degree it will self correct, at least to a point with time, and exercise. Although I have seen plenty of square rears with the issue, too. It is by and large genetic, the parents probably had some degree of it as youngsters. Unilateral cow hock is often a result of puppies or young adults that are confined to a too small space resulting in a muscle imbalance. Caught quickly, it will generally straighten right out.
