No. They are usually their darkest when born, get quite light around 8-12
weeks, then start to darken again.
Bitches lighten up when they shed, then come back in the same as before the
shed.
There are some many different "tone" colors of sables..........I started
with, as Carolyn mentioned, a silver sable when I got my first GSD. I had no
idea about colors at that time, but I had so many comments on how pretty she
was from everyone that met her. I only bred her once to a Morgan son and she
never reproduced herself. Got very rich red sables.
Over the past 35 years I would say I have had 10 or 11 different color tones
of sables, and of the 6 I currently have, only 2 are similar, a mother and
daughter.
And something no one has touched on.....when you get washed out black and
tans one of the best ways to get pigment back in your line is to breed to a
good rich pigmented sable.
