I'm not a geneticist, and certainly not scientific...but one thing I
know...long coat is not the same as having no undercoat. There are long
coats with plenty of undercoat, just like a normal coat. There are long
coats with little or no undercoat, just like some dogs with regular
length coats have sometimes little or no undercoat. And then there are
the dogs (normal or long coated) with too much undercoat.
All separate things, folks.
Now, if someone wants to go into details about how these
things are inherited, that's fine...but not all longcoats are open
coated...open coats have little or no undercoat...that's why they are
called "open." It means the dog's coat leaves the dog unprotected from
the elements (rain, cold, heat, etc)...in other words, the dog is "open"
to the bad weather...a normal coat, as well as a long coat with
undercoat, protects the dog.
When you have too much undercoat, which also happens, the dog can
get almost waterlogged... the correct coat doesn't get soaked and the
dog will be dry at the skin...this can happen with a long coat, too, as
anyone who's ever lived with a coat can tell you...the dog will APPEAR
soaking wet, but if the proper undercoat is there, no matter how long
the outer coat is, he'll be dry at the skin. Insufficient undercoat,
whether in a normal coat or a long coat, and that dog will be wet all
the way through.
The German Shepherd's coat is the way it is (when correct) for a
reason...to protect him from the elements in normal situations, be
those as a herding dog or a guard dog or what have you. Anything that
varies from the norm is not good for the dog...not just a "beauty"
thing. As to how coat faults are inherited, that's not my
bailiwick...let the scientific minded people have at it now! VBG
