There are two points in this message I'd like to address. 1. "The problem with allowing whites is what some "breeders" might experiment with to try to come up with a new color that would be rare and therefore.......witness the "PANDA" Shepherds now. ..............."show me the money". <G> This is why I think it should remain a disqualifying fault. " If during the past 107 years, the fanciers of the white coated GSD have not tried to come up with new and rare colors, what makes you think they'd do so if the color were allowed back in the conformation ring? This is like saying that since the breeder who developed the so called "Panda Shepherd" also breeds colored GSDs, that all colored GSDs should be DQ'ed. 2. "Normally breeders of white dogs are just as elitist as we are with our Standard dogs are considered to be, and have absolutely no reason or interest in joining our Clubs. " I can't speak for the local GSD clubs, but many fanciers of the white coated GSD are members of the parent club. In fact, in April the three national U. S. clubs dedicated to the white coated GSD addressed the BOD. Two of the three clubs are proud of the rich heritage of the GSD and want their dogs to remain as members of the GSD breed despite the conformation DQ. They also support the PC. Only one club is seeking breed separation. I would hate to see it go through that again. I'm sure it was discussed and agonized over at length for whatever reason. I agree with the decision. I hope we don't get into changing the Standard at the whim of a preference of colors. The problem with allowing whites is what some "breeders" might experiment with to try to come up with a new color that would be rare and therefore.......witness the "PANDA" Shepherds now. ..............."show me the money". <G> This is why I think it should remain a disqualifying fault. It it were not....we would always have someone 'playing with colors' and we dont want to be a color category Breed. Also I do think there is a DEFINITE difference between undesirable, a fault and a disqualifying fault. Normally breeders of white dogs are just as elitist as we are with our Standard dogs are considered to be, and have absolutely no reason or interest in joining our Clubs. Your occasional pet owner is different and should become a member to learn. If there were an influx of white breeders joining a Club that adhered to the GSD Standard as it is ..........I would have to wonder why? <G> Would you as a breeders that are trying to conform to our Standard as closely as possible be interested in giving your time and efforts and money at meetings of a club for white dogs while working to promote their shows??? Think about it.........<G> There are three different Clubs for white GSD now......with three different names. They are breeders that love their white dogs .....and yet they all three disagree in some aspects. I doubt a good breeder of whites would have the interest or time for our "Standard" Clubs. When I got my first German Shepherd (as an adult) whom many of you will remember, my wonderful Ben, I wanted a Black. The only thing I knew about GSDs was that when I was born in Frankfurt Germany, my parents bought a Black German Shepherd. Moonco was with me the first 8 years of my life. After that my parents went to other breeds. When I got Ben I answered an ad in a local paper advertising (you may have guessed) RARE Black GSDs lol lol Of course I didn't know better. I guess it was a good thing because there was no finer dog! However, we would not disqualify Blacks because there are those advertising them as rare. I would hazard a guess that this is true even if it was in a major magazine. There have always been those who prey on others who are lacking in knowledge and always will be. After all a person who did not want to adopt one of the dogs we dropped from our program because she wanted a purebred dog - went to a pet shop and paid $1,300 for a Labradoodle. I think we should revisit colors in our dogs in the standard. I may be wrong as I am far from an expert but I think I recall from a previous time this subject came up on da list that the White dogs and dilutes were considered undesirable because originally in Germany it was decided that they were weak in character. Of course, they are not truly weak in character because of a color and color has nothing to do with who the GSD is. My Blue male has a gorgeous color and I would LOVE to have and show a dog of his color! Not my Jager lol as with most rescue dogs he is definitely not a show dog <<<grin>>> but he is most certainly STRONG in character LOL I do believe in Canada the White dogs and Dilute dogs like my Blue can show. Is this true and have they always allowed the lighter colors? If they did not allow them at one time and now do then perhaps there is hope that in the future the standard in the USA will change yet again and allow them to show! I think that would be a good thing but that is just my opinion.
