I wish that I could send the picture of my Dancer's Dancers litter. When born,
there were 5 sables, 2 of them very, very dark, 2 a bit lighter, and a bit
lighter yet. The four b/ts were all really dark, deeply pigmented.

Oh, Linda ! One part of your statement is very wrong. They are not all born
very light. I have often had sables that I thought were black & tans at
birth - they were VERY dark - I had to bring them to very strong light to
see what their color actually was.

When sables are born there is no doubt of their future color. They are born
very light and get darker pigment as they grow. My last litter out of a
sable bitch produced 10 puppies and only one was a sable. My previous
litters usually had an average of 40 % sables. Linda HendrixGoose Creek, SC

Meant to say maybe they were not a sable but actual a black and tan. I
have
a GSD right now that has grey underlay with certain times of the year
looks
sable but is not. Testing for coat color sometimes might be the only way
to
know for sure.

Is it possible even though they looked as though they had a saddle they
were actually a sable?

Barbara.......that statement is not true. I know of several people who
have bred two sables together and got black and tan puppies. I evev know
of one litter where 80% of the puppies were black and tan. Since sable is
the dominant gene, you would not think that would happen.......but it
does.

You can only get a sable by breeding to a sable..Barbara Amidon If both
parents are sable you will only get sable
