Let me give you a few of good reasons to have a tattoo or chip -
1. If your dog is lost or stolen, an amber alert can be sent out to vets and
humane societies. I know of a person whose GSD was stolen from a dog park
and later reunited with her because the thief took the dog to a vet who had an
alert of that GSD.
2. If someone ends up with your dog, because the dog was lost, and claims it
is their dog, you have proof the dog belongs to you. I know of a person this
has happened to and the chip proved ownership.
3. I had my local humane society comtact me because a dog they picked up had a
chip I purchased and implanted in him as a pup. He was able to be reunited
with his family, rather than either being adopted out or euthanized.
There are many more reasons, scenarios, etc, but we each need to decide what is
right for our dog(s).

Chipping vs. Tattoo
I have one dog with a chip and a bitch with a tattoo. Both came from the
ame breeder. But I choose the dog to not be tattooed because I planned on
oing a lot of special photography with him. I just didn't want the tattoo
howing in close ups. Now for my bitch with the tattoo, I find it a bit
ifficult to read at the moment. I don't think the average person could read
t. But I might be wrong.
My biggest worry is someone stealing my dogs whether they're ID or not. I
ave numerous admirers that would give anything to have my GSDs. Those
dmirers come with tons of compliments & eyes of envy. I always make sure my
ehicle is locked if I have to run for something. But I've known vehicles
roken into to get what the 'bad person' wants. Now, would your dog rebel
ver someone doing so? We certainly hope that dog would rebel against that
erson's intentions to make them think twice.
One time I had an extremely friendly one-year-old GSD attack my car window
hen he thought someone was going to get into my car. I never thought he
ould've ever done that. Not "baby Lobo." So never say never to anything.
One day some months ago my GSD followed me into the workshop in the
ackyard. Not knowing I locked him behind not realizing he had followed me
n there. When I finally realized I had not seen him for awhile I got this
ick feeling because I had my garage door open. I thought maybe he had
otten out that way. I always say his testicals are his GPS. I called his
ame so loud the next town could've heard me. Of course he didn't come. I
ot in my car to look for him for about 45 wasted minutes, to of course no
ind BECAUSE he's in my workshop right? There's no feeling like that feeling
f losing your child, dog or whatever. By now, I had the whole neighborhood
elping me look for him. They are so strict in my town about altering every
og they catch before a release. I knew if the dogcatcher got him before I
id there would be a fight to get him back in one piece. So I made a
esperate call to them. My message: "If you get my show dog before I do DO
OT neuter him because! If you do, everyone involved will be altered as
ell!" There was a few seconds of silence. Then the gal on the other side
aid, "Okay, I'll give everyone your message."
All of this time, my bitch was trying to tell me my dog was in the workshop.
f I would've only slowed down a bit to read her body language I could've
aved myself a lot of grief. And also a threat to my Humane Society.;o) When
finally saw that big ole face in the workshop window my stressed heart
inally slowed down to normal. And of course I called the dogcatcher to
pologize. My dog will not bark to let me know. He just waits patiently for
hatever. So if he would've barked to let me know we could've saved the day
n a better way. [sigh] I finally praised my bitch for telling me where her
rother was.
There are some bad people who would want our dogs for whatever reason/s. I
now of a few that have never found those lost or stolen dogs. How

ssue!...I have an Army son who has a NOPI on his OFA hip ex-ray
ertificate!...I refuse to be told I MUST put an identifying chipÃ? in my
og...and I understand the reasons behind the mandate, never lost a dog in
ver 50 years of owning them ( the Air-force almost lost one of my dogs
bout 20 years ago...never told that story on the list before)....if folks
re going to mis-represent the true identity of their dogs, chipping is not
oing to stop them.....I may change my mind on this, but for now, I not
oing to do it...yes I'm stubborn...but so are most of you!.....why else
ould you not feed Raw...lol....Ed Hill
