California's voting public passed a law that all laying hens in cages must have
room to flap their wings. Sorry don't remember the exact size cage but this
meant that the ranchers had a choice. Build new bigger buildings with larger
cages or kill off half of all their birds (less birds in existing cages). This
was a hsus sponsored bill and went into effect the beginning of this year. The
one ranch I deal with is owned by one family and they killed half their
chickens to be legal. Hsus is now trying to pass this same requirement in the
next 49 states and is also trying to get legislation passed that chicken
ranchers in other states can't sell eggs to California unless they have the
same required space and cages for their hens. So far that has been halted but
they continue to scream. Now I have to admit the hens in those cages looked
cramped but they don't act any different than my free range chickens.
Needless to say prices for eggs are increasing and with this new bird flu
things can get really ugly. Anja
