I am a bitch person. Over 12 years ago I planned a breeding to get males -
something I rarely do. I needed a good male and figured to breed him, finish,
and park him in a pet home. That way I didn't have to keep a boy around the
house but he would be handy when I needed a sperm donation. So,
breeding/whelping went as planned and I kept two boys, just to be sure. I
spent socialization time with them but didn't want to bond with a boy dog. I
held them with open arms - never really asking for their hearts. By four
months of age, one of the boys had bonded with a friend and never looked back.
The other, Firedog, decided I was his and that was that. Both boys easily
finished and Breaker went off to live with my vet tech but I could'nt chase
Firedog off with a stick. Had I given him away he'd have just come back
home.....
Both of us learned a lot through the years. Gradually he took over all the
little places in my heart - learning to guard the house and becoming my truck
buddy after I lost Gala. I learned to hold him close and that boy dogs are
kind of neat. He became my second home bred champion and gave me my judge's
license. He gave me my second multiple champion litter. I gave him MY heart.
We all go into this "game" knowing that we are going to loose them at some
point. In comparison they are so short lived.
Yesterday, at 12 1/2 years of age, Firedog finally decided it was time to
leave. I held him tightly while he left. I will always hold him tightly in my
heart. My heart is breaking..............
