The best stain remover I have ever used can be bought at your local grocery store. it is call Spot Shot and it will remove pet stains and even old red wine stains from my very light carpet. Spray it on and let it dry. Stain is gone. If you have used a carpet cleaner on dog urine you have probably made the spot bigger. Stop pouring water on it let it dry then spray with this product. When the Spot Shot has done it thing you can shampoo again if you like. If you have a really bad and smelly spot and want to save the carpet call your local carpet cleaner and have them pull the carpet and clean it front and back. Then have them replace the portion of the pad which is soiled. The floor underneath will need to be sealed with Kills (sp) or another product that will seal wood or subflooring. The carpet needs to dry a day or 2 and then it can be stretched and laid. This is the only way to get rid of old dog smell urine spots. I would be really, really cautious w/ anything w/ hydrogen peroxide in it. (ESPECIALLY if you have dark carpet!) I have it here for the occasional bump or scrape and on occasion, if a dog shakes and I've ended up wearing some, it will "spot" by removing dye in jeans etc. All of the big home centers have wonderful products in their cleaning aisles for spraying on carpets and even they suggest testing in a not so obvious area. I don't doubt it works, but be careful it doesn't make the carpet lighter. For some reason these little accidents are not being confessed when this happens and then eventually discovered at a later date like red wine stains or gravy etc. A little while back someone on this list posted a recipe for urine stains from dogs (obviously) so I thought I might want to try it on these old stains that I needed to get rid of. Lo and Behold, they did come off, even the old red wine stains. I want to thank this person, whoever it was, for giving me this recipe, now my carpet is nice and clean again just in time for Thanksgiving - LOL . But now, at least, I'll have some powerful stuff to counteract these mishaps. The recipe was: 16 oz. of Hydrogen Peroxide 1 tbsp. baking soda 1 tsp. dish detergent. Thank you, whoever you are.
