The ‘best’ loved dog , the Labrador Retriever , only had 6280 dogs
registered and 1007 litters.
As far as I know, these numbers have stayed fairly static here in Canada (I’ve
been a member since 2002) but this does not, of course, include the
thousands of unregistered GSD’s sold ‘without papers but purebred’.

Thanks Mary Anne!
I do wish there was something to encourage breeders/owners (either or) to
permanently register their dogs here in the US. I know many many many
eligible pups never get their individual registration papers, ever.
The AKC has not published registration numbers for a few years now to my
knowledge. The last statistics I knew of, to be #2 in AKC registrations, it
took closer to 50,000 registered! I was almost surprised that in Canada it
is less than 4,000; but I know the population is much smaller there as
well.... How much of a drop is the registration number from, say 10 years
ago? I imagine the trend is similar here in USA, but to be sure we will not
know with those numbers not being published since about 2010 :(
Thanks for the info!

I’m not positive Jen, but most of us up here register our litters
immediately and we have to register the pups within 6 months of selling them
to new owners or we get ‘disciplined’.
There were 3637 GSD’s registered in 2015 and 693 litters. The 2014
figures were 3803 dogs and 663 litters.
It’s in the December Kennel & Bench which goes out to members only.

Wow! I had no idea the Havanese was such a popular breed in Canada!
Seems that just 13-15 years ago it was a new breed.
Surprised to see the Berner in the top ten too. I don't think it ever has
been in AKC, though I think the Frenchie has made the top twenty here before
:)
Is it a good, or a bad thing our breed has remained in the #2 slot? I
wonder how many registrations that equates to (and is it litter or
individual), and how many pups who were eligible did not get registered.
Anyone know if there's a way to find out the real numbers (for both AKC
and CKC)?
