Yes, it was an outdoors national. I showed Destiny in the Specials class,
and Fran made all his cuts. Then he brought back all those who were cut to
look them over again, in groups of six as I remember. The only bitch he pulled
out was Destiny. I had sprained my ankle, and was going to ask Angie Stegner
to come in, and Fran asked me what I wanted to do. I decided to gut it out, (I
had no pain by then, just a balloon at the end of my right let).
We took another pass, and Fran divided his Selects into smaller groups, and
excused Destiny again. I think he loved her movement, but at the Select level,
he couldn't go with the missing pre-molor. I understood that, and was just
glad to get another few minutes in the ring. When I got out, I almost had to
cut my shoe off.
Two funny stories about that. When Dakota went Winner's Dog in 82, we saw
Joan and Fran in the hall of the motel, and Tedi and I were very excited. Fran
said to me, "Just wait until tomorrow and see what Destiny does with Barbara
Amidon." I didn't think a thing of it, as I knew of her missing tooth, and
didn't expect anything. Then Barbara gave her Winner's Bitch, and Ernie Loeb
gave her number two Select.
When I showed two years later under Fran, I showed him the left side of her
mouth first. He looked, and turned to me and said: "Oh yes, it's the other
side where the tooth is missing, isn't it?' He is one sharp guy, and a great
person. I laughed when he said that, and realized I might as well take my thumb
out of her mouth.
Was that actually 23 years ago?
