There is no space or money for released or stray animals in CA, and they
want to push through a bill
that will cost more and increase numbers in shelters? The answer,
apparently, is to fly them to other states for rescue?!?!?

Salinas Animal Services reduces holding time for stray animals
August 13, 2009
Citing the state's budget cuts, the Salinas Animal Services has
reduced the number of days they can hold a stray animal before it's
put up for adoption, transferred to a rescue agency or euthanized.
The shelter has changed the holding time for lost animals from four to
three business days, officials said. The move took in to effect
Wednesday.
The decision, officials said, stemmed from Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger suspending the mandates, under the Hayden law, for the
2009-10 fiscal year. The bill, passed in 1998, extended the length of
time a shelter can hold the animal.
This means owners will only have three days to reclaim their animals.
The days don't include the day the animal came in the shelter,
officials said.
"People should come to the shelter immediately when they realize their
pet is gone," said Animal Services Manager Cindy Burnham. "Don't wait."
