I've never read Anne Seranne's book on breeding..but a friend of mine
has a new litter of Old English Sheepdogs, and a couple of the puppies
(like 4 out of 9) weren't doing well. She spent yesterday giving them a
little of the formula from the book that is supposed to replace
electrolytes and get them started...just thought for those who hadn't
read the book, this formula might come in handy. Of course, this was
also in the days before Pedialyte, which I think does the same thing...
Anyway, the formula is: boil water...take 4 teaspoons. Add that to 1
Tablespoon of light Karo syrup, add a teensy pinch of salt, not
much...let it cool down (of course) and put a few drops on the puppies'
tongues every few hours until they're as perkier and stronger.
Another thing...she's been supplementing the weak 4 because the
others tend to push them off the dam...I suggested that she supplement
the strong ones and let the weaker ones get more time on the dam...that
had never occurred to her, so I'm adding this to the post here just in
case there are others who haven't thought of it, either.
