I don't understand the desire to finish a coat. As it is, there is nothing to prevent anyone from showing a coat, just as anyone can show a dog with a missing tooth or two. These things are faults, not DQs. How much weight a judge assigns to the fault is up to the judge...and if most judges penalize either of those faults enough, the dogs won't finish. Granted, more dogs with missing teeth will finish than dogs with coats...but still, there is nothing to prevent anyone from showing a coated dog. I have to ask, tho --why would you want to finish a coat anyway? This is a fault you can't hide...AND if it's a true coat, it is more than a cosmetic thing...most coats are soft and some are soft and pily. Coats like this are a PITA to working dogs who have to be out in any weather. There is a reason why we have faults in Standards...most have to do with the dog's usefulness. With coats, it isn't a question solely of length...it's texture and depth...and a soft coat is a big disadvantage to a working dog. Now, if you want a pet dog class, that's a different thing...and then you'll probably still have to describe the coat, and allow length but not soft texture and/or deep pile. There are enough dogs around with faults that I don't see why we'd want to encourage showing more of them. Peggy > In a message dated 10/11/2007 2:05:50 A.M.
